Little Georgian Lady - The Countess of Christmas

Little Georgian Lady peg doll by Karen Vallerius

Ever since my visits to the Stamford Georgian Festival back in September I have been inspired by all things Georgian and have been researching Georgian costume and needlecrafts.

OK, so haven't got round to making an actual costume yet but wanted some Christmas themed craftiness so I made my first little peg doll in a Georgian costume.

I made a robe a l'anglaise for the doll with an old gold coloured wild silk underskirt and a metallic overdress and bodice; she wears a pale gold wild silk fichu tied with an overlarge bow at the front; she has a large broad brimmed hat trimmed with ribbon, flower and feather; her face is fashionably white with high arched eyebrows and beauty spot; her hair is loosely tied back in the manner of a Gainsborough portrait; you might note that in the photo above her cheeks have not yet been painted red!
